Travel & Transportation
Traveling to Crete is possible either by plane or by ferry.
Air travel
The main company is Greece’s flagship, multi-award-winning carrier AEGEAN Airlines (en.aegeanair.com), which operates flights throughout the year between Crete and Greece and many international flights from Athens, as well as direct seasonal links in summer.
Most national airlines also fly into Athens and from there you can fly to Crete, with an easy layover in Athen’s stunning airport. During the summer season (April-October) there are also many international flights direct to Chania and Heraklion.
Airports:
Heraklion: AEGEAN (Olympic) and SKY Express several times a day from Athens and international flights from April to October.
Chania: AEGEAN (Olympic) and SKY Express several times a day from Athens and international flights from April to October.
Sitia: AEGEAN (Olympic) and SKY Express several times a week from Athens.
Ferry
The two main ferry companies are Minoan Lines and ANEK/Blue Star Ferries, both serving the following routes:
Piraeus to Souda (Chania)
Piraeus to Heraklion
Twice weekly service with ANEK (M/F Prevelis) from Piraeus – Milos (only once weekly) - Santorini – Anafi – Heraklion (only once weekly) - Sitia
Ports:
Heraklion and Souda (the port of Chania) offer daily ANEK/Blue Star Ferries and Minoan Lines from Athens Piraeus.
Bus travel on Crete (KTEL)
There is an extensive bus network on Crete called KTEL, with hubs in the capitals of each prefecture: Heraklion, Chania, Rethimno and Agios Nikolaos
Car Rental
There are numerous car rental companies mainly situated at the airports of Heraklion and Chania. Most companies offer to drop the rented car at your arrival at the airport or the ferry port.
